GENERAL

Personal names in Chinese follow a completely different set of conventions than Western names, which makes them difficult to translate. In Chinese, the surname always precedes the given name; someone named John Smith would be called “Smith John.” The famous Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang is called Zhang Ziyi in China as Zhang is her surname.
